1. Trends in International Tourism

After the lifting of restrictions on overseas tourist travel in 1964, the number of Japanese traveling abroad increased very quickly. In fact, the number reached 17.82 million in 2000, the highest ever. Unfortunately one of the effects of the terrorist attacks in the U.S. was the dramatic reduction in overseas travelers to only 16.22 million last year. In addition, the number of foreign visitors to Japan is a matter of concern, being at a standstill.
