10. Foreign Visitor Trends
In 2000,
the number of visitors coming to Japan reached 4.76 million, the highest
on record. The exchange rate was relatively stable that year, and an
increasing number of visitors from Asian countries came to Japan. However,
Japan ranks 33rd in the world in the total of travelers from foreign
countries. Developing policies to attract foreign travelers to Japan
has been a major concern. 'Welcome Plan 21,' a government plan to increase
the numbers of foreign visitors, aims to have 8 million foreign visitors
a year by 2007. The figure for 2001 was 4.77 million, a slight gain
over the previous year.
