1. Trends in Inbound - Outbound Travel

Low consumer spending and rising fuel surcharges resulted in a negative impact on the number of Japanese travelers overseas in 2008 with figures falling below 16 million to 15.98 million. The current global financial crisis and an appreciating yen also impacted on the number of overseas visitors travelling to Japan, seeing the first decrease in 30 months in August 2008 compared with figures from the previous year. The number of overseas visitors in 2008 totaled 8.35 million, almost identical to figures from the previous year (8.34 million) revealing harsh conditions in both the inbound and outbound travel markets over the 2008 period.
