(Passenger base)

In order to capture the actual results for the period from April to June 2003 and ascertain future trends for the period from July to September, the Japan Association of Travel Agents (JATA) surveyed sales results and status of bookings for five travel agencies offering overseas packages. This is a summary of the survey that was carried out at the beginning of July 2003.
The sales results for April through June were influenced strongly by the reinforcement of the travel advisory on SARS issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. This resulted in the cancellation of package tours at all five travel agencies, severely impacting travel to China and other Asian destinations.
When current bookings for July to September are compared with actual results for April to June, there is a strong trend toward recovery. The trend is apparent mainly in those overseas destinations that were directly affected by SARS. The outlook for future bookings is expected to improve as the threat of SARS declines.
On the bright side, bookings for domestic tours remain favorable, with levels for July to September already exceeding those of the corresponding period last year. In particular, booking levels for such destinations as Okinawa and Hokkaido are especially encouraging this year.
