In order to grasp future overseas travel trends, the Japan Association of Travel Agents (JATA) surveyed five travel agencies offering overseas package tours regarding their sales performance for the period from July to September 2003 and status of bonkings for the period from October to December 2003. This is a summary of the survey that was carried out at the beginning of October 2003.

Results for July to September

  • There was a marked upward trend for all destinations, with European and Oceania destinations doing particularly well.
Both achieved September sales at over 90% of September 2002 figures.
  • Destinations in China and Asia, which recorded weak results in May and June, recovered rapidly after August.

Booking Status for October to December

  • Reservations from October to December for Hawaiian and European destinations equaled or exceeded the same period last year.
  • The end-of-year holiday calendar makes it comparatively easy to take vacations which is to the advantage of destinations in Hawaii and Oceania.
  • As a visa is no longer required for short-term stays in China, the airlines are hoping that this favorable development will encourage more travelers to visit China, and are increasing the number of flights accordingly.
  • Demand for travel to other countries in Asia, particularly those with resort destinations, is growing due partly to several three-day weekends in the fall.
