Bookings
for Tours for the Period from April to June 2004
(researched three months ago) and Results of Recent Survey

Agencies surveyed
JTB Corp., Kinki Nippon Tourist Co., Ltd., Nippon Travel
Agency Co., Ltd., Jalpak Co., Ltd., Hankyu Express International
Co., Ltd.
In
order to grasp future overseas travel trends by destination,
the Japan Association of Travel Agents (JATA) surveyed package
tour total sales for the period from April to June 2004
and compared them with the same periods in 2002 and
2003. The survey also assessed the level of bookings
for the period of July through September 2004 as compared
to the same period in 2003. The five major travel agencies
offering overseas packages were surveyed at the beginning
of July 2004.
Actual results for April through June
Rallying
steadily since last year's drop due to the SARS scare,
China and Asia posted hefty gains compared with 2003.
Hawaii and destinations in the U.S. and Canada showed
a strong trend toward recovery, exceeding 2002 pre-SARS
levels. In addition, thanks to the sequence of holidays
during "Golden Week" (April 29-May 5) favoring
the taking of long vacations, travel to Hawaii, Guam,
Saipan and destinations in the U.S. and Canada in April
and May rose favorably.
Bookings for July through September
All
destinations showed growth greatly exceeding last year,
with China and Asia in particular staging a remarkable
comeback. In addition, compared with bookings for April
through June in the survey three months ago, actual bookings
for May and June rose sharply. Furthermore, according
to the present survey, August and September are also expected
to post significant gains.
