In order to grasp future overseas travel trends by destination, each quarter the Japan Association of Travel Agents (JATA) conducts a survey of overseas package tours offered at six package tour travel agencies. For this survey, the  results for each month during the period from January through March were compared to that of the same period the previous year. The status of bookings for the period from April through June was also compared to that of the same period the year before. This survey was conducted in early April 2008.

Results for January to March 2008

Although destinations in Asia and Europe performed comparatively well, overall results were poor, and the only gain on the same period last year was for Asian destinations in the month of February.

Neighboring areas in Asia such as Korea and Taiwan performed satisfactorily.

Added variety to package tours for European destinations from all travel agents aimed at the student market fared well over the three-month period.

China has been performing poorly since last autumn, and negative media surrounding the area has continued. China will be an area to keep a close eye on.

Status of Bookings for April to June 2008

The increasing popularity of Korea was one contributing factor to favorable bookings to Asian destinations.

Another element contributing to the increase in bookings for Asian destinations was the upsurge in package tours using chartered flights out of Haneda Airport.

Bookings from June onwards are performing better than those for the same period last year to Guam and Saipan as a result of increased flights into Guam.

China is performing badly and will be an area to keep a close eye on in the months ahead.

Travel in April is down due to the poor string of holidays over Golden Week this year; however, bookings for May to neighboring destinations are performing strongly.

The increase in value of the yen should bring back demand for overseas travel.
