In order to grasp future overseas travel trends by destination, each quarter the Japan Association of Travel Agents (JATA) conducts a survey of overseas package tours offered at six package tour travel agencies. For this survey, the results for each month during the period from April through June were compared to that of the same period the previous year. The status of bookings for the period from July through September was also compared to that of the same period the year before. This survey was conducted in early July 2008. |

Results for April to June 2008
】
The placement of holidays over Golden Week this year was more conducive to travel in May and as a result, numbers in May for Hawaii, Guam and Saipan topped the numbers for the same period last year. |
・ |
Long-haul destinations such as the U.S. mainland, Canada, Europe and Oceania, for which high fuel surcharges have a significant impact, all performed poorly over the three-month period. |
・ |
Demand for business travel to China remained strong; however, figures for the area dropped significantly overall. |

【
Status of Bookings for July to September 2008
】 |
・ |
Bookings for Asian destinations (see Note 1), particularly short-haul destinations affected less by fuel surcharges such as Korea and Macau, are performing strongly, with bookings for July and September exceeding the numbers for the same period last year.
・ |
With the exception of Asian destinations (see Note 1), all other areas are struggling, with bookings for all destinations especially low in August during the Beijing Olympics. |
・ |
Increased exposure through the mass media for the Beijing Olympics is increasing demand for China, and bookings are expected to increase after September. |
・ |
Soaring fuel surcharges are really hurting demand for overseas travel, significantly affecting family vacation plans over the summer holidays. |
・ |
Travel agencies are working hard to appeal to those families who have not yet decided where to go by discounting children's fares and complementing product line ups with package tours that incorporate economical elements. |
