  2. Goals and Objectives

    An association sanctioned by the Minister of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism based on the Travel Agency Law, the Japan Association of Travel Agents (JATA) seeks to improve the quality of services provided to travelers to and from Japan. It contributes to the development of the travel and tourism industry through a variety of activities including disseminating information, encouraging cooperation among members, and promoting the development of businesses and legislation that will benefit the membership and the industry at large.

    1,130 travel agents

    Associate   Members:

    497 travel agencies not Active Members

    Allied   Members:

    91 companies and organizations closely related to the travel industry

    Overseas   Allied   Members:

    590 non-resident travel agencies, transportation companies, hotels,
    destinations, travel and tourism suppliers

    Remarks:

    Any person who intends to operate a Travel Agent business or Travel Sub-Agent business must be registered with the Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport in one of the following classifications, defined by the Travel Agency Law :

    1. There are now two classifications of registration, one for Travel Agents and the other for Travel Sub-Agents.
    2. The Travel Agents are further classified into the following categories:
      • First Category Travel Agents:Companies that organize and sell overseas and domestic tours and also make travel arrangements for the clients as an agent.
      • Second Category Travel Agents : Companies that organize domestic tours and sell domestic and overseas tours, and also make travel arrangements for the clients as an agent.
      • Third Category Travel Agents : Companies that sell overseas and domestic tours, and also make travel arrangements for the clients as an agent.

  4. Member Organizations

    JATA participates in these organizations:
    • World Tourism Organization (WTO)
    • Pacific-Asia Travel Association (PATA)
    • American Society of Travel Agents (ASTA)
  5. Domestic Cooperation

    JATA consults with various organizations including those listed below and part in a variety of events. It strives to understand the current state of the Japanese travel industry in order to better serve the needs of travel agents and consumers, and works on any problem that may arise.
